  [매거진M] 조선 말 황해도 치하포. 청년 김창수(조진웅)는 일본인을 죽인 죄로 인천감옥소에 수감된다. 사형수로 의미 없는 나날을 보내던 김창수는 비참하고, 가엾기 그지없는 감옥 안 조선인들의 모습에 큰 충격을 받는다. 곧 그는 억울한 사연을 가진 죄수들과 간수들의 소장(訴狀)을 대신 써 주고, 옥중 학교를 열어 글을 가르치기 시작한다. 일제에 기생하는 감옥소장 강형식(송승헌)의 악행에도 김창수는 뜻을 굽히지 않는다. 가진 게 없고 못 배웠다는 이유로 억울한 옥살이를 하는 조선인에게 그는 점차 희망이 된다.
  제목 그대로 한 인물에 관한 영화. 대한민국 임시정부의 주석이 된 백범 김구(1876~1949)의 본명이 바로 김창수다. 1896년 스물한 살의 나이로 일본인 쓰치다 조스케를 살해한 김창수는 사형수로 수감돼 있다, 1898년 감옥을 탈출해 도피 생활 중 김구로 개명하고 여생을 독립운동에 전념했다. 
  혈기 방장하던 청년 김창수는 어떻게 삶을 깨우치고 민족의 등불이 될 수 있었을까. ‘대장 김창수’는 흐릿한 역사로 남은 김구의 2년여 옥중 생활을 영화적으로 재구성함으로써 그 답을 찾으려 한다.
  이원태 감독은 “절망의 끝에서 희망을 건져 올리는 이야기”를 만들고 싶었다고 말한다. 지금 세대에게 희망적인 판타지를 선사하고 싶다는 의지일 터. 모진 고문 속에서 김창수는 내내 외친다. “할 수 있어서 하는 게 아냐, 해야 해서 하는 거지.” “몰라서 억울한 일 당하지 않도록 가르친 겁니다.”
  하나 이 판타지의 무게가 김창수의 삶을 흐릿하게 만든다. ‘대장 김창수’는 단순한 영웅 서사를 취하고 있다. 요약하자면 주인공이 시련과 고뇌의 시간을 지나 분연히 민족 영웅으로 올라서는 이야기다. 동료고 악당이고 황제고 할 것 없이 주변 인물 모두는 김창수의 삶과만 인과관계가 작동하는 제한적 활용에 머무른다. 화면이나 음악도 김창수의 드라마를 고조하는 데 전념하는 인상이다. 
  험상궂은 죄수와 간수를 하나둘 깨우치고, 기지를 발휘해 옥중 잔치를 여는 등 감옥 안의 소소한 에피소드들은 ‘쇼생크 탈출’(1994, 프랭크 다라본트 감독) 같은 동종 소재 영화의 영향이 짙게 느껴진다. 관객은 김창수의 옥중 생활에 무지하지만, 어쩐지 영화는 전혀 낯설지 않게 다가온다. 평이하게 다듬어진 이 드라마 안에서 감추진 역사, 진짜 김구를 가늠하기란 쉽지 않다.
  조진웅의 흔들림 없는 연기, 신정근, 정규수 등 베테랑 조연들의 호연은 더없이 믿음직하고, 맛깔스럽다. 그러나 더 큰 울림을 줄 수 있었던 영화. 

Review of the movie ‘Man of will’

In the late Joseon Dynasty, in Hwanghae, a young man called Kim Chang soo gets imprisoned for killing a Japanese person. Kim chang soo was spending meaningless days in the prison as a condemned criminal when he got shocked by the miserable and poor locked up Koreans. So, he starts to write petitions for wrongly accused prisoners and prison officers and teaches the imprisoned people by setting up classes. He doesn’t concede his rights even though a police manager who is parasitic to the Japanese government continues his wicked acts. Gradually, he becomes a spring of hope for Koreans who are serving years in prison just because they got nothing and know nothing.

Following the title, the movie was about one person. In 1896, at the age of 21 Kim Chang soo was in confinement because he murdered a Japanese, Joseka sseuchi and in 1898, he escaped from prison. While he was living a life of escape, he changed his name to Kim Koo and devoted the rest of his life on the independence movement of Korea. How could he realize the truth of life and become the flame of nations? The movie tries to find the answer to this question by recasting the two years of Kim Gu’s life in prison which has remained as a vague part of history. Director Lee says he wanted to make a story that seeks for hope at the end of despair. This would be a desire to present a hopeful fantasy to today’s generations. Even in the middle of harsh torture, he keeps reciting these two lines of words, “I’m not doing this because I can but because I have to”, and “I taught them not to suffer just because they are unenlightened. However, the weight of this fantasy movie is blurring out Kim Chang soo’s life. The movie is nothing more than a simple description of a hero. To summarize, it is about how the main character becomes a hero for the nation after going through times of hardship and trouble. It remains at a level which the surrounding characters are used narrowly only to operate the cause-and-effect between the main character and the background. Moreover, it is an impression that music and screen effects too are focusing on raising tension of the drama. Defeating tough prisoners and prison officers, taking a tact to open up a party in the prison, many minor episodes in the movie looks like it is hugely influenced by the movie ‘The Shawshank redemption’. The audience doesn’t have any ideas of Kim Chang soo’s prison life, but in some way, the movie doesn’t feel unfamiliar. In this plainly trimmed drama, it isn’t easy to weigh up the hidden history and the real Kim Gu. Actors’ steady performance is trustworthy and appealing however, it could have given a deeper touch in the hearts of the audience.
